Located in the small town of Pukalani, this neighborhood grocery store is a wonderful spot to pick up everyday items without having to pay resort prices. The grocery has been open in the same location for more than a generation. Refurbished and modernized, it has become the center of the Pukalani community. On any given day one will see area residents chatting and socializing while in line with milk, beer and bread. There are many unique island products available along with favorite national brands. Located adjacent to the Kula Lodge on the slopes of Haleakala, this shop is a colorful and inviting spot for anyone to find unique items, crafts, jewelry and more. The large parking lot is located on the down slope side of the Kula Highway. There is lots of free parking for those who want to browse. Once inside, you'll see shelves filled with local jams, jellies, dressings, coffees, cookies and other wonderful, tasty items. The shop also offers wonderful hand-crafted items, clothing and one-of-a-kind jewelry. Some of the best pottery and paintings from local artists can be purchased here, too. -Lottie Tagupa
This mom and pop shop in the Happy Valley area of Wailuku is one of the more authentic and especially successful grocery stores in Central Maui. For example, they offer everything national convenience stores have and then some. The shop opens early for those who want to grab a quick cup of coffee and a bear claw before work and a bento for lunch. The after work crowd stops in for a case of cold beer and poke. Yes, that's right: ahi poke. All kinds of ahi poke, sashimi and island style sushi. Please note that parking is a bit tight, but it's worth the extra effort. - Lottie Tagupa
Located in Kahului, just a stoplight or two from the Kahului Airport, this local market is one of the best places on the islands to load up on everything from sushi to poke to noodles. The deli counter is more than just a sushi stand - it offers a long list of dishes that include yakitori chicken, miso yaki butterfish, and karaage chicken (fried chicken). A long list of plate lunches available include the lau lau Hawaiian plate, hamburger steak, and lots of other daily specials. Local artist Sherri Reeve is known for her vivid watercolors depicting Hawaiian marine life. Original paintings, prints, gift cards and even designer T-shirts are available in her Upcountry store. Sherri's work can be seen in various other galleries and shops, but this store has the widest selection by far. Brightly colored yet somehow gentle, her style is very different from most local artists'. It focuses on simple beauty rather than hyper-color surrealism.
Set in a cozy space, with fresh flowers adorning the shop in all corners, Nuage Bleu features a dizzying variety of woman's jewelry, clothing, swimwear, shoes, and accessories. They also have a decent collection of children wear and toys. Don’t fret even if you are looking to buy a gift for your loved once as the store also stocks up on books, candles and other local products. Not only are the store’s goods reasonably priced, but you can be rest assured that they are of good quality too. If you are in the mood to go on a shopping spree, then Nuage Bleu is not a bad idea at all.
