A compact restaurant, Amici Lausanne is acclaimed for serving big, bold Italian flavors. This Italian restaurant isn’t a living cliché but does offer many kinds of pasta, at least four on one count, including gluten-free types. The ingredients here are bought fresh from all corners of Italy, as is evident in the flavorsome delectable food served. The menu changes every few months, taking note of the season. This charming café’s simple outdoor terrace is a bit of a miracle. It is perched on top of a medieval staircase that winds its way into the town proper, and is surrounded by interesting views of one Lausanne’s oldest neighborhoods. During the summer, there is nothing quite like sitting on the stone terrace and enjoying an afternoon away under the café’s iconic green umbrellas. What is perhaps more miraculous is the hot chocolate here: it’s thick, creamy, warm, and by all accounts the best in the city and even Switzerland. The plain variety is luxurious enough, but intrepid visitors can try hot chocolate with ice cream.

The menu is loaded with dishes typical of the Vaud region, each using local produce and ingredients. Situated just behind Lausanne’s main train station, Café du Simplon is a bit of a local institution where young working professionals and students gather for simple, generous meals. It is not an accident that the café is so near a train station: it takes its name from the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, a train line founded in the late 19th Century that still takes passengers on luxurious journeys from London to Istanbul by way of Lausanne. The menu takes cues from the train’s route, with European, North African, and Balkan dishes that make surprising use of seafood. There are vegetarian options, and a nice collection of local craft beers. The café is not luxurious, but offers plenty of comfortable seating and outdoor tables.

This restaurant is located in the north of Lausanne in a small agricultural village named Savigny. Inside there are two different eating areas, one of which is more of a café and the more of a brasserie. The general impression is comfortable and rustic, offering lots of wood in the decor and tradition. There is also the possibility of holding seminars and conferences in the upper rooms. The food on offer is largely traditional and rather good. The service is friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is pleasant.
