The Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Since its inception in 1961, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has been devoted to collecting works of art spanning both history and geography. Today, the museum features exceptionally notable collections of Asian, Latin American, European, and American art and houses a contemporary museum on its campus, Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM). With this expanded space for contemporary art, innovative collaborations with artists, and an ongoing transformation project, LACMA is creating a truly modern lens through which to view its comprehensive fine collection of more than 100,000 works. With this much to explore, it is an ideal spot to spend an entire day at the museum.

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)

Japan's top architect, Arata Isozaki, built the Museum of Contemporary Art, or MOCA as it is called by locals, in 1986. The series of bright galleries with exposed vaults display some of this century's finest artwork. Works by Mark Rothco, Franz Kline, Claes Oldenburg and more are displayed year-round. In addition to the curators, artists and critics frequently give guided tours. Inside the museum is a great restaurant called Patinette serving great Mediterranean cuisine.

Skirball Cultural Center

Skirball Cultural Center is a community events center which hosts concerts, lectures, theater, art exhibitions and more. Skirball houses a museum, cafe and offers educational courses. The center aims to explore the correlations between Jewish and American culture, and offers many family-friendly activities.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology

One of the most intriguing museums in Los Angeles, the exhibits here are both professionally sound and completely dubious at the same time. Although the exhibits feature artifacts and relics from the Lower Jurassic period, they seem to stay faithful to the theme of the museum. The main quest for the visitor is to determine whether or not this entire museum is a sham. Regardless of your ultimate conclusion, the museum is certainly worth both the price of admission as well as your time exploring it.

Norton Simon Museum

Endowed by industrialist, financier and philanthropist Norton Simon (1907-1993), the Norton Simon Museum that bears his name is an extraordinary window into art and antiquities. This museum houses the single largest collection of art assembled by one man. Here you will find art spanning seven centuries and exhibited both in the galleries and in the charming gardens. Simon collected 2,000 years worth of Hindu art, as well as works from Tibet, Nepal and Cambodia. In addition, there are works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Goya, Botticelli, Renoir, Van Gogh and many more. The bookstore has an outstanding collection of art books. See their website for further details.

Gordon R. Howard Museum

Run by the Burbank Historical Society, the Gordon R. Howard Museum is located in the historical Victorian Mentzer House. Built in 1887, you can explore this historic home and admire interesting displays and artifacts about life in the past. This small museums showcases the local Burbank history where you can view photographs that show the evolution of Burbank from a small settlement to an entertainment wonder. Tours are by appointment only.
