One of the best known bars in Madrid, it has catered to world famous celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner during their hey-day. It hasn't changed much since those turbulent 50's and it still offers a charming combination of old-fashioned decor - marble-topped tables, dark-paneled walls, old-fashioned waiters and good food at reasonable prices. Founded by Caesar Gallant and his friends, Saporem specializes in contemporary cuisine. This delightful resto-bar with its lovely light fixtures, candlelight, vintage decor and wooden accents has an aura of romance to it. Savor dishes like octopus bras, leek cocotte, kebab hake and, broccoli and salmon tartare. Round it off with decadent desserts. Complement your meal with wine and cocktail. You can also dine alfresco at their beautiful terrace.
It is a small, jumping blues bar straight out of New Orleans with excellent acoustics to boot. You had better arrive early on live concert nights to find a space. Do not come if you are claustrophobic or allergic to smoke. If you are not, you will find that the atmosphere and the music are simply electric. The decor is all exposed brickwork, wrought iron, and wall-coverings made of old newspapers.
The Costello Club, located in the Plaza of Angels area of Madrid, has only been around for two years but offers some of the best entertainment in Madrileño nightlife. The club is split into two levels whereby on the first floor you can chill and meet some new folks. Downstairs, the night gets going with live jam sessions and is a little more boisterous. The owners have also pulled in some international acts, most notably the Strokes. The drinks are perfect to start or end the night and some excellent Spanish vintages are served alongside some stiff cocktails, perfect for any denizen or tourist in this turbulent capital.
