Tindley Temple, which was originally known as the East Cavalry Methodist Church, was founded by the Reverend Charles Albert Tindley in 1902. Known for his work as a gospel composer, Mr. Tindley was also instrumental in aiding migrants from the south. The church was later renamed in his honor and Tindley Temple pays tribute to his memory by continuing to provide free meals and clothing to those in need.
The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia has been bringing people together in worship since 1698. Construction on the current building began in 1869. The Church is a spectacular example of Victorian Gothic architecture, which depends on French and English medieval Gothic cathedral motifs and mixed use of materials in the construction. Various parts of the church are built from granite, sand-toned brick, terra cotta and marble. Tiffany windows complete the design, as well as an impressive set of five windows by Wailles of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.
Founded in 1767, Historic St. George's United Methodist Church is the world's oldest Methodist Church building in continuous use. In addition to weekly worship services, a museum contains many artifacts of the early Methodists. Treasures include the 1771 Asbury Bible, the oldest known Methodist Chalice in the world, many portraits of famous early Church members and an extensive collection of early Methodist publications. Being an evangelical Protestant church, Triumph Baptist Church preaches to honor individual freedom along with the reformed worshiping practices. The church is a lovely building with stained glasses that adorn the long windows with much beauty. Apart from religious practices, the church also serves as a childcare center and a niche for holding several events.
