Built in 1889, the Alvord Lake Bridge was designed by Ernest Leslie Ransome. Arching over the pedestrian access to Golden Gate Park, it is one of the most popular landmarks in the city. It is often studied by engineering students owing to the fact that it is the first bridge in the country made using reinforced concrete. An earthquake in 1906 destroyed almost all structures in its vicinity, but the Alvord Bridge was largely unaffected and remained a strong surviving example of Ernest Leslie Ransome's engineering genius.

Don't leave San Francisco without a stroll through this legendary square nearby Fisherman's Wharf, which is named after San Francisco's original chocolate-maker. There is a bakery and several restaurants and, of course, there's the Ghirardelli Ice Cream Shop where you can savor the deliciousness of the old-fashioned Ghirardelli sundae or buy some sweet goodies to bring back. Take some time and visit the art galleries, gift and specialty stores, and shoe and clothing shops.
