Situated in Appingedam, Nicolaikerk is a beautiful church dating back to the 12th century. This magnificent church showcases the architectural styles from different periods as it was constructed in seven phases from the 12th century to the 16th century. The church boasts grand Romanesque designs and features two choir bays from the 1200s and 1400s. In addition to this, its interiors are richly decorated with paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries. It has a tinge of Gothic designs due to its restoration after the 1500s. The Schweizer Kirche was built on the foundations of the Grosser Kirche in 1948. Architect Otto Bartning designed the church and the structure has a beautiful red facade along with a gable roof. The ruined stones from the Grosser Kirche were reused to build this building. The church organ was built in 1962 by Ahrend and Brunzema.
