National Museum of Natural History

Established in 1910, the National Museum of Natural History aims to inform people about the natural history of the earth through its exhibits. Nestled within this museum is the famous Hope Diamond, which has gained notoriety for supposedly carrying a curse. Apart from that, some of the museum's popular galleries include The Discovery Room, Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals, Dinosaurs/Hall of Paleobiology, Insect Zoo, Teleology: Hall of Bones, Ocean Hall, Hall of Human Origins, and many more.

Ford's Theatre

Ford's Theatre, an iconic theater, is recognized as the place where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14th, 1865. A century later, in January 1968, the theater was reopened again for a performance after being under the management of numerous government organizations, including the United States Department of War and the National Park Service. Also found within Ford's Theatre is a Lincoln Museum that displays artifacts from the assassination, including the gun Lincoln was shot with. Mementos from Lincoln's life are also on display.

Ratner Museum

Ratner Museum is a fine art museum, housing various paintings done in crayons, water colors and pencils. The frequently changing exhibits include wood work, sculptures, cloth designing and much more. The museum spans across three buildings, comprising of a conference room, a public library and children's literature center. There are various concerts, tours and lectures on various topics, that take place in the museum. So if you want to spend your day appreciating works of art and culture, Ratner Museum is your place to be.

National Museum of the American Indian

Located in National Mall, the National Museum of the American Indian opened in 2004 as a part of the Smithsonian group of museums and research centers. The Museum structure is a throwback to adobe homes in early Native American culture. This fascinating museum takes you on a riveting journey of learning Native American History. With a highly naturalistic design, the NMAI illustrates Native American history through various works of art, artifacts, and other remnants of American Indian culture are on display. In the past, exhibits have included indigenous world views through dress, native modernism, and contemporary indigenous viewpoints as told through poetry that provided a valuable addition to our understanding of Native American culture. Admission to the museum is free.

National Museum of the United States Navy

The U.S. Navy Museum, one of the fourteen naval museums, was established in 1961. It displays artifacts that date back to 1793 and the collection provides insight into U.S history. With artifacts like the world's deepest diving submersible, it attracts hoards of visitors every year. Apart from that, it also houses photographs and other materials, vital for researchers and students. By hosting various exhibitions, it not only creates awareness but also pays respect to the national heroes. You can also take back a part of the history from the memorabilia displayed in the gift shop. As the museum is located in the Washington Navy Yard, all visitors to the museum must have a military ID, Department of Defense Common Access Card, be a museum employee or be accompanied by someone with one of these credentials.

President Lincoln and Soldiers’ Home National Monument

President Abraham Lincoln lived at this charming Gothic Revival cottage, located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home, for thirteen months in total during the years of 1862, 1863, and 1864. It was here that he developed the Emancipation Proclamation. The day before his assassination, Lincoln rode out to the cottage before heading back to the White House. Today, the cottage stands as a tribute to the "Great Orator". Guests can visit the cottage by purchasing a ticket for a guided tour of the grounds and building, the entrance is through Eagle Gate of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
