Murcia Cathedral

Built at the site of the Aljamía Mosque at the behest of Jaime I the Conqueror, Murcia Cathedral is a masterpiece of architectural prowess that spans the ages between the 14th and 18th Centuries. Shaped by successive generations of architects, the cathedral is a masterful blend of styles that enmesh to create a chronicle of the city's past as defined by religious faith. The facade is a baroque jewel, embellished with lavish sculptures and filigree - the work of the talented Jaume Bort i Meliá. The interiors, in contrast, are Gothic in design while the bell tower boasts Renaissance and Neoclassical elements. Rising to a height of 90 meters (300 feet), the bell tower is one of Spain's tallest campaniles, with 25 bells that were cast between the 17th and 18th Centuries. Inside, the church encloses over 20 chapels, each with a distinct character of its own and a notable cache of artwork. The Mudéjar Vélez Chapel and the Renaissance Junterones Chapel are especially intriguing with their monumental wealth of architectural nuances. The Cathedral Museum houses a collection of 17th- and 18th-century artwork, as well as archeological remains of the historic mosque that once stood at this site. The Murcia Cathedral continues on as a place of worship even today and is one of the city's most iconic attractions.
