The soaring tower of the church measuring 86 meters (282 feet) dominates the city skyline and welcomes worshipers from far and wide. Subject to several renovations over the years, 2010 being the most recent, this 19th-century church is an important cultural landmark of the city.
The Maria Immaculata church is also known as the Jesuitenkirche and is one of the most significant attractions in the city. Dating back to the mid-18th Century, the church structure was designed in baroque architectural style. The magnificent church was constructed with rubble and sandstone. The church ceiling is pretty impressive and features beautiful frescoes painted by Joseph Gregor Winck. The frescoes depict scenes from St. Mary’s life. The high altar of the church is simply spectacular with ornate designs and a gorgeous tabernacle. The church has many old relics like paintings, pulpit, and confessionals from the 18th Century. Today, the church is an active place of worship and is used for many community events, concerts, and weddings.
