The Children's Park of Ramapo is situated in Spring Valley, close to Pascack Brook, and offers ample space for practicing outdoor games. The park boasts a nature area and a pond for fishing on a leisurely afternoon. It also has trails for cycling, walking and jogging across the green patches. You can often spot kids and teens playing at the basketball court, baseball diamond or in one of the four handball or tennis courts. It is best to visit this park in fall when the foliage breaks out into pleasing autumnal colors.
The historic Van Allen House was built in 1740 for local farmer Hendrik Van Allen. Located off U.S Highway 202, the house has served as a headquarter to George Washington in July 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Now managed and operated by Oakland Historical Society, the house serves as a museum preserving various artifacts and ephemera pertaining to the war and the era. Open to public on the third Sunday of every month, between 1p and 4p, the Van Allen House makes for an interesting and informative visit.
