"Seventeenth-century Ireland comes alive"

Rathmullan, a fishing village on the shores of the lough, has commemorated the famous Flight of the Earls with a heritage centre. Pictures, letters and displays illustrate how the defeated last chieftains of Ireland, Hugh O'Donnell and Hugh O'Neill, departed Ireland after their defeat in an uprising against the English Crown at Kinsale Harbour. Also depicted is how the Celtic way of life ended after this time with repressive laws and mass exodus from the townlands around the area. New literature has been on display since 2001 that re-tells this seminal event and another key phase in Ulster history - the Plantation of Ulster. Other centres sharing this project include Derry/Londonderry's Tower Museum.
