"Endangered Swamplands"

The Ciénaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve falls under the Matanzas province of Cuba and can be found bestriding its southern coastline. The biosphere is one of the most expansive wetlands in the entire Caribbean and covers nearly 6,280 square kilometers (2,425 square miles). Declared as a Ramsar Site in the year 2001, the reserve shelters an assortment of topographies ranging from dense mangroves, subcoastal matorrals and endangered coral reefs to mixed grasslands and coastal lagoons. Also rich in wildlife, the elusive American flamingo, American crocodile and the Cuban crocodile can be spotted here.
