"Former Whaling Vessel"

Sprawled on the side of Patreksfjörður like a steel-dressed beached whale, the Gardar BA 64 enjoyed a long and colorful past before it met its fateful ruin. The Gardar BA 64 was a stunning, rust-colored whaling vessel at one time. Launched in 1912, the hull of the ship was categorically designed to bear the brunt of frosty Southern seas. At its prime, it braved stormy seas to hunt whales, although it was later sold to the Faroe Islands where it renewed its identity. The vessel was sold once again to Iceland, where it was used to fish herring. After years of defying turbulent seas, the ship was regarded unfit for service in 1981. Gardar BA 64 was finally run aground in the Skápadalur Valley, where it stands in spectacular ruin against Iceland's dramatic backdrop.
