"Gorgeous Caldera Lakes"
Carved by a prehistoric eruption, the neighboring lakes of Öskjuvatn and Víti fill a lunar-like crater that spans nearly 50 kilometers (31.06 miles). The lakes bask under the mellow sun, appearing instantly alien with their large, open landscapes. While Lake Öskjuvat is known to be the second deepest lake after Jökulsárlón, the lake Viti is relatively smaller, unraveling like a pool of molten moonstone. Its warm waters, still balmy from the effects of the volcano, make it a popular spot for swimming. However, the presence of carbon dioxide forms a blurry sheen over its surface, a hazard that swimmers should be weary of. There is also a small area for camping off the Öskjuvatn lakeshore, at Dreki.
