"Earlier than 9th Century"

This castle is by Porta Castello, in the ancient part of the city, and can be reached by going up Via Veneto from Piazza Garibaldi and then up the Aquino. It dates from earlier than the ninth century, according to documents that refer to a move by Carlo II Il Calvo. It was transformed into a residential palace, known also as Palazzo Chiola, the name of its last owners. Many noblemen have lived here such as D'Afflitto and the Caracciolo, who made renovations to the building. It was also a military fort and prison, where there is now a hotel and restaurant. The facade includes a balcony that was added in the nineteenth century and the back of the building is Baroque style.
