Santa Maria Arabona

"Inspired by French Gothic"

The name of this church derives from aera, air, alluding to the rarified atmosphere that surrounds it. According to others, it comes from Ara Bonae, the god Bona, to whom a pre-existing temple was dedicated. Nonetheless, it is certain that it dates from 1208, inspired by French Gothic style. It had a period of splendor, and a period of abandonment in the 14th Century. There is a rectangular apse typical of this kind of church and a bell tower on the right. The interior has three naves and light penetrates through rose windows. The cross vault, has arches and on the left of the presbytery is a Gothic tabernacle and an Easter candelabra. The choirbox has paintings by Antonio Martini from 1373. It is not far from the Alanno-Scafa exit of the A24, and can also be reached from Manoppello Scalo from the road by the railway at the right of the town.
