"An Ancient Place"

This place gets its name from the fact that it is on an undulating plain. It was devastated by the Saracens in 879 and 914, and the Castrum Planallae existed here settled by Longobards and Franks, but its origins are even older, as arms, coins, sculptures, remains of necropoli and architectural remains from the Roman era testify. In the eleventh century, it passed under the rule of the Orsini, Margherita of Hapsburg and the Farnese. The San Leonardo, San Salvatore, Santa Maria and Nives chapels remain here, as does the Church of Sant'Antonio and the Carmelite Convent from the 16th Century and the De Felice and Sabucchi palaces from the 18th Century. Pianella is famous for two reasons. Firstly because of its oil, which comes from a variety of olive that has a special fruity taste. It is also known for the Buongiorno tradition, an Easter morning rite. Take route 151 from Pescara to get here.
