Il Volto Santo

by Ra Boe

"The Image of Christ"

Built between 1617 and 1638, this was restored after World War II. The interior has three naves, divided by cruciform pillars. It has been modernised but some 17th-century paintings have been preserved, and a Madonna of Snow in terracotta dating from the 18th Century. On the main altar is a silver, gold and stone reliquary that, according to legend, holds the image of the face of Christ, put on a transparent, colorless silk. They say that an angel, dressed as a pilgrim, gave it to Giacomo Antonio Leonelli da Manoppello. The sanctuary is found a few kilometers from Manoppello. From Pescara take the A25 and exit at Scafa-Alanno.
