"Roaring Beauty"
Falling from a height of 21 meters (69 feet), the Khone Phapheng Falls astound with their sheer ferocity and mighty roar as millions of liters of water cascade down the rocks. Although not the tallest, these waterfalls on the Mekong are Southeast Asia's largest, with rapids that extend across 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) of the river's course. Churned by the thousands of islands of the Si Phan Don, the Mekong foams, froths and roils as these cataracts tumble from above. There are several viewpoints around the falls, as well as restaurants, cafes and shops. Experienced adventurers can undertake kayak tours, however, amateurs are advised to stay away from the rapids' more perilous points.
