El Cielo Biosphere Reserve
"Cloud Forest Reserve"
One of the most extensive ecosystems in Mexico, the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve bursts with diverse ecology. From the mystical canopies of cloud forests to the karst topography of Sierra Madre Oriental, the reserve is dappled with pine-oak trees, maple, hornbeam etc. Like a moth to a flame, the tangerine-colored, fiery flamboyance of the tropical milkweed attracts the magnificent monarch butterflies. Home to several endemic species and a refuge for migratory birds, animals from jaguar to black bears are often spotted here. Spanning across an area of 144,530 hectares (357,100 acres), the reserve was included in UNESCO’S Man and the Biosphere Programme in the year 1987.
