Samalayuca Dune Fields (Medanos de Samalayuca)

A majestic landscape of endless golden dunes, the Samalayuca is indisputably one of the most breathtaking sites in the country. Forming the northern side of the Chihuahua desert, the velvety sands are rustled by the winds, forming a symmetry of ripples and creating a spectacular picture. While aesthetically pleasing, the dunes are also commercially significant owing to the silica deposits which are used in the glass and ceramic industry. Sheltering over 400 endemic species of flora and fauna, they are an important biosphere zone in the country.
