The Royal Swedish Opera, or simply the Operan, carries forward the legacy of King Gustav III under whose reign the Swedish arts were celebrated with much aplomb. The great monarch was a passionate patron of the arts and founded both the Royal Swedish Opera and the Royal Swedish Ballet in the year 1773. A new home for the Royal Opera was soon conceived of and constructed in 1782, although this was eventually replaced by the glorious classical Operan in 1892, designed by Axel Johan Anderberg. The stately exterior does little to prepare you for the opulence within; a grand spectacle of elaborate stucco embellishments, lavish gilt ornamentation, and rich, vibrant paintings, all illuminated by sparkling chandeliers. The Operan is truly a baroque gem and a fitting venue for the Swedish national stage. The opera house hosts a much-acclaimed program of ballets, concerts and operas; it is the home of the Royal Swedish Ballet and Opera companies to this day.
This is home to many of Sweden's top international stars, featuring many a classic play written by Strindberg, Ibsen, Chekhov and Shakespeare. King Gustav III founded this magnificent theater in 1788 for Swedish dramas to be performed in their original language. The building is a milestone in Swedish theater history. Please arrive on time: there is no admission once the performance has commenced. Guided tours are available, and these provide an interesting look at both the theater's history and daily routines.
Brainchild of renowned Swedish playwright August Strindberg, the Strindbergs Intima Teater was established in Stockholm in 1910. In its initial run as a performing arts hub, the Strindbergs Intima Teater hosted nearly 1500 performances based on about 25 of Strindberg's plays, such as The Ghost Sonata and Miss Julie. While the theater closed after Strindberg's death, it was revived by the Culture Department in 2001, and has since been restored to its thriving glory. Today, the theater hosts plays in tandem with the Royal Dramatic Theater, besides occasional in-house productions and plays for children and young adults.
An epitome of spherical symmetry, The Ericsson Globe is a great example of architectural innovation in Stockholm's impressive skyline. Not unlike a giant pearl, this spherical masterpiece commands much respect. The indoor arena was built over a period of two and half years beginning in 1986. With a diameter of 110 meters (361 feet), the sphere is the world's largest hemispherical building and an impressive event venue with a maximum seating capacity of 16,000. Although primarily used as a hockey arena, the venue has also hosted other prestigious sporting events and concerts by international artists like Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Shania Twain, Katy Perry, Radiohead and Lady Gaga. Visible for miles around, the Ericsson Globe grants unmatched views of the city from its top, accessible via Skyview - an external, inclined elevator.
Originally opened in the spring of 1959, the Filmstaden Sergel was renovated and re-opened in the winter of 1995. Since then, it is known as one of the most prolific theater complexes, not to mention one of the largest, in the city. While the beautiful theater contains a historic aura, it is equipped with fine modern accouterments, alongside 14 theaters and seating up to 2098.
Accessible from the Mosebacke Torg, the Mosebacke Uteterass is a popular outdoor beer garden that operates only during the summers.
