Los Roques Archipelago

"A Marine Paradise"

A cluster of islands and islets amidst the blue hues of Carribean, Los Roques del Archipelago is a natural jewel where marine biodiversity reaches its peak. 130 kilometers (80 miles) away from the mainland of Venezuela, the national park was founded in 1972 with the goal to protect the pristine beauty and natural wealth found here. Spread over 221,120 hectares (546,399.42 acres), the park houses some of the world's most remarkable coral reefs with 61 species of corals, 60 species of sponges and over 250 species of marine fauna. Touted to be one of the biggest marine parks in the Caribbean Sea, the park is home to endangered sea turtles and approximately 90 bird species. A conglomeration of ecosystems, the mangroves and seagrass beds also are a significant landform. With such rich biodiversity and exquisite natural beauty, the national park has become a booming tourist destination and an important center for fishing and pearl diving.
