"Longest River in South America"
One of the largest river systems around the world, the Orinoco is fourth-largest globally with respect to the volume discharge of the water, flowing through Venezuela and Colombia for 2,140 kilometers (1,330 miles). With a name that literally translates to 'a place to paddle', the river unsurprisingly serves as a primary transportation system for many. Several endemic species are found in the river waters, including the Black Spot Piranha and Cardinal Tetra. The Orinoco Crocodile, a high risk endangered species, is found in the middle and lower parts of the drainage basin. While commercial activities like coal and gold mining have put the river at risk, the river shores are still home to indigenous tribes of Warrau, Guaica and Maquiritare, to name a few. A natural wonder, the river is a hotspot of natural resources in South America.
