Established where the River Orinoco meets the Atlantic Ocean, the Mariusa National Park protects the rare ecosystem of the Orinoco delta. Straddling the Macareo and Mariusa channels, the park is spread over 331,000 hectares (817,918.81 acres). It represents one of the most important geographical regions in Venezuela. The delta's swamps and drainage basins represent some of the rarest natural systems in the world. The Warao tribe occupy this lush tropical park and their wooded huts and villages are a sight to behold. Home to some of the most endangered species in the world, the manatee and water dogs can be found at this park. Many bird species, such as herons and corocoras as well as rare species of water snakes can be seen in the waters of the park.
