Hoan Kiem Lake

This small lake between the Old Quarter and the French Quarter is central to Hanoian folklore. A ghostly shrine (the Turtle Pagoda) standing on an islet at its center pays homage to a golden turtle. In the 15th century, this heroic reptile is said to have returned a magic sword to its home in the lake after it had been taken. These days, the sculptured park along the banks plays host to postcard sellers, hawkers, elder men playing chess, llone photographers looking for a lucrative snap among others.

Hanoi Old Quarter

Remarkably frozen in time, Hanoi's Old Quarter offers a stark contrast to the frenetic pace of the main city. The district takes sprout from near the shore of the Hoan Kiem Lake, radiating in streaks of alleyways and age-old thoroughfares that still grapple with the quarter's 13th Century spirit. Earlier a heavily walled unit that was connected to the main city after the 19th Century, the Hanoi Old Quarter pretzels itself into a rather cramped space, a place where a more urbane version of chaos ensues. Here, the old quarter mirrors its erstwhile atmosphere, when streets were dotted with silk merchants, artisans, bamboo carpenters, tinsmiths, and other specialized vendors who peddled their humble wares to meandering visitors. A night market tries to keep up with the promising vestiges of this economic legacy, a retail wonderland that reveals a staggering variety of souvenirs, handicrafts, clothing and food. This fading face of Vietnam's timeless heritage is also home to an exalted architectural treasure, which includes the Temple of Literature, the One Pillar Pagoda, and the Flag Tower of Hanoi.

Lenin Park

Located in the busy neighborhood of Ba Dinh District, Lenin Park is a local recreational park frequented by locals and tourists alike. The park is a popular hangout among families and children. It has dedicated play areas for the kids and there is a little train for children that takes them around the park. People enjoy skating and zorbing activities in this beautiful green space. The park is known for housing the only Lenin statue in the country.

Hanoi's Train Street

Everyday around 3p and 7p, a speeding train passes only inches away from the homes of a residential neighborhood of Hanoi. This train route connects Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city. As the train comes honking, the residents quickly get up and carry away their little children indoors along with their drying clothes, furniture and whatever belonging is scattered on the railway tracks. Some spots are so dangerous that the residents have to press tight to the walls or duck as the train passes by. Once the train has passed they go right back and sit on the tracks and continue with their daily routine. This view of a speeding train passing only inches from the homes is a hit with tourists and they line up at the designated time to get a glimpse of the startling sight.
