"Ancient Hot Spring"
The idyllic village of Reykholt is home to what seems like a small slice of Tolkien fantasy. At a small spot in this quaint hamlet, a perfectly circular crater bubbles with mineral-rich hot spring waters. Dating back to the 12th century, the Snorralaug, as it is known, was first referenced in medieval poet Snorri Sturluson's works. Encircled by sturdy, ochre-colored flagstones, the Snorralaug doubled up as a neat natural bathtub, making it one of the oldest-known hot springs to be used by humans. The spring experiences erratic temperatures at times, sometimes even reaching a searing boiling point. The area around the spring is equally fanciful for visitors to explore, replete with a hidden tunnel and a library that holds some of Sturluson's works.
