Orkuveita Reykjavíkur

by OliBac

"Quite Illuminating!"

Iceland is a country famed for its wild natural beauty. But this beauty also has its functional sides, and throughout the twentieth century Iceland's wild nature has been harnessed to provide the nation with almost unlimited electricity. This electricity is largely responsible for heating our houses, thus rather obviously playing a considerable role in making Iceland habitable at all. On the fiftieth anniversary in 1971 of the foundation of Reykjavík Electricity, it was decided to preserve items connected with its past operations. In 1990 the museum's collection was finally open to the public, mainly consisting of objects and pieces of equipment that were used by Reykjavík Electricity. The Orkuveita Reykjavíkur also possesses a large number of letters, films, photographs and drawings; the largest and most important exhibit is, however, the Elliðaár Power Station itself.
