Santa Teresa

Named for Santa Teresa Convent from the 1750s, this neighborhood, with its winding streets and hilltop views, is a major attraction for tourists and artists alike. Although no longer the affluent area it once was, Santa Teresa is still home to some mansions, one of which is the Chácara do Céu, which was once home to art collector Raimundo Otoni Castro Maya. It now serves as the Museu da Chácara do Céu. Visitors should definitely take the tram ride that starts at the city center and takes them through the streets of Santa Teresa.

Rio Scenarium

This lively samba club is housed in a beautiful old building that doubles as a storage warehouse for props and antiques used by the city's film industry. As a result, you will find yourself shaking a leg to a backdrop of mannequins, antique furniture and other relics from the past. Spread over three floors, revelers can chose to enjoy a meal from the restaurant, or just strut their stuff on the dance floor among bohemian locals and tourists alike. The club frequently hosts excellent live music, from samba to forro - check the website for listings. Always packed on weekends.

Sítio Roberto Burle Marx

Once home to the famous Brazilian landscape architect who designed the Parque do Aterro do Flamengo, this is now a foundation where nature lovers can find a remarkable display of plants from all over the world, among which are some rare specimens collected by the owner. Within Sítio Roberto Burle Marx is the old farmhouse, a 17th-century chapel (where clavichord concerts are held) and Burle Marx's studio. The greenhouses are also a must-visit.

Museu Carmen Miranda

Carmen Miranda lovers unite! This small kitsch museum is located at the very southern tip of the Parque do Flamengo. Highlights include memorabilia from the famed singer's life and career. The infamous fruity headdresses are among the singer's paraphernalia and exquisite costumes that are on exhibit. Posters, postcards, T-shirts, and music are on sale as well.

Pé de Boi

Colorful, beautifully-crafted artesan products from across Brazil compete for space in your suitcase at Pé de Boi. This combination shop and art gallery stocks traditional handicrafts that include hand-crafted vases, jugs and bowls; wonderfully soft hammocks and colouful ceramics, all bought directly from individual artists across the country. Pé de Boi has been a huge success since its inception in 1985, and items sourced by the store have been exhibited at New York's Guggenheim Museum and the Cartier Foundation in Paris. If you're looking for a souvenir that is more than mass-produced tourist tat, Pé de Boi should be your first port of call. - Lucy Bryson
