Museo Storico - Padiglione delle Carrozze
"Popes: Apartments, Coaches and Ceremonies"
The Vatican Historical Museum, founded in 1973, was transferred in 1987 to the Pope’s apartment on the Lateran’s first floor. Paul the Fourth restored the apartment comprising ten frescoed halls adorned with French tapestries, Roman tapestries furniture, arms and wooden sculptures. The collections include portraits of the Popes since the sixteenth century, a documentation of now-defunct papal ceremonies and relics of the papal armed forces. The Coach Pavilion, together with the coaches of popes and cardinals, also houses the nascent automobiles used by the Popes.
