Fontana del Tritone e Fontana delle Api
"See the Sea God"
In the middle of congested Piazza Barberini stands Fontana del Tritone (the Fountain of Triton), one of Bernini's (1598-1680) finest. The fountain was completed in 1643. It shows the sea god Triton carved into the center of a shell. Pope Urban VIII Barberini commissioned the Fountain of Triton as he did the other fountain in the square, Fontana delle Api (the Fountain of the Bees). It takes its name from the bees of the Barberini coat of arms, sculpted into the fountain. Bernini also designed the latter fountain to be used by travelers. The Fountain of Triton has undergone quite a few restorations over the past century.
