"Imperial Site"

Originally, the site of Vatican Necropolis was an open air burial ground with mausolea and tombs. Roman laws prohibited burials within the town's boundaries. Thus, several cemeteries were created alongside roads apart from city graveyards. Vatican Necropolis rests beneath the magnificent Saint Peter's Basilica. Archaeological digging carried out here revealed that certain sections of the necropolis dated back to the Imperial era. Today, Vatican Necropolis can be explored through guided tours and visitors can choose their preferred language for the tour.
