Commanding the scenic Gironde estuary, the Cordouan Lighthouse is an old lighthouse that was built by Louis de Foix, a renowned architect. Its architecture resembles the Renaissance style. The original construction also consisted of a small church. The site always had a beacon-tower since 880 CE which was destroyed in the 16th Century. Later, the current lighthouse replaced it. The tower stands tall since 1611 and provides signals to ships approaching the coast. Measuring 68 meters (223 foot), the lighthouse is noted as one of the tallest lighthouses in the area.
