The Eglise Saint-Eutrope à Saintes is a very popular sight of the city. This magnificent church was built during the end of the 10th Century to commemorate St Eutrope. Its construction is a classic example of Romanesque architecture with Gothic nuances. It is divided into a lower and a higher church, and its mighty bell tower gives this place its iconic appearance. The interior of the church is adorned with several stained-glass windows that depict various scenes including The Holy Family which sits right above the chapel. Even the pillars of the church are carved to depict holy scenes thereby showcasing the painstaking efforts of architect Jean Lebas. The paintings, sculptures and the motifs that adorn the church are enough a testimony as to why the place has earned the status of an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is said that this quaint church dates back to the 5th century. L'Eglise Saint Jean-Baptiste, which had a Romanesque decor, was later transformed into an excellent exemplification of Gothic architecture. The church suffered ravages of time during the Hundred Years' War. Years later, only a few remnants of its past grandeur could be preserved and the state continues even today. Visitors from all over come here to appreciate its architectural beauty as well as to spend some time amidst its tranquil ambiance.
