Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos Church
"Our Lady of the Rosary Church"
This 18th Century church is one of the most beloved and revered amongst Baianos from African descent. In 1714, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary which mainly consisted of slaves gathered the funds to finish the church. It is located in the historic neighborhood of Pelourinho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and occasionally you will find a bloco or drum troupe outside its doors playing the sounds of the Samba. The building itself is a molded in the Rococo style with Portuguese azulejos inside and many artifacts related to the syncretism of Candomblé and Catholicism. One other note, in the back of the church there is a cemetery dedicated to African slaves.
