Santa Casa da Misericordia Museum
"City Church since 1549"
This museum is housed in one of the oldest religious complexes in the entire country. In 1549, there was just a small chapel and infirmary here and when the Dutch invaded in 1624, they ransacked and destroyed them both. The church was reconstructed over the next century until it was finally finished in 1728 and today you will find the museum right next to the chapel. The museum holds a collection of artifacts that highlight the city of Salvador, from 18th Century furniture and religious paintings to ritual spaces and Portuguese azulejos, the entire complex is fascinating for people of all ages.
