Sparrenburg is ancient castle believed to have been built in 1256 and served as the city's defensive wall. Built by the counts of Ravensberg, the castle was regularly expanded and changes were made so it could withstand new forms of weaponry. As time went by, the castle ceased to be put to its original use and was used instead as a dungeon before eventually falling to ruins in the 17th-century. The castle was later restored to its former glory and is now a major tourist attraction. Numerous cultural events take place at the castle.
The Externsteine stands in the Teutoburg Forest, by the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg. It is a remarkable cluster of rock formations made of sandstone. The distinctive columns rise out of the ground abruptly, reaching high above the trees of the surrounding forest. It is believed to have been a site of religious importance since prehistoric times, patronized by pagans before being taken over for Christian worship. A relief depicting the descent of Christ from the cross can still be seen here. At the height of the Nazi Regime, the Externsteine once more came into focus. Today, Externsteine is a popular tourist attraction. The information center nearby chronicles the legends and historic findings associated with the site.
Kump Brilon is a must visit for music aficionados. The place is always busy with eclectic music performances by talented bands and they also host solo gigs. The venue has a wonderful decor; modernity reflects in the interior but touches like exposed-brick walls and yellow lights add an old-world charm. Kump Brilon boasts of impressive acoustics which makes every performance a treat to be a part of.
The beautiful Martin-Luther-Kirche can be dated back to 1861 and is one of the most significant churches in the town. One can see many traces of Gothic Revival architecture in the church's structure. The church's interiors are equally impressive as well. The baptismal font designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen is one of the striking features of the church. Musical performances are a regular at the church. Apart from the regular services, guided tours of the church are conducted as well.
The stunning Grabbe-Haus was not always a theater. The building was constructed in 1752 and used as a prison for many decades. Both the prisoners and the disciplinarian lived on the premise; in 1801, one of the disciplinarians had a son who grew up to be the famous poet Christian Dietrich Grabbe. In the 1900s the building was bought by the town of Detmold and turned into a restaurant and theater. Since its opening in 1990, the theater has hosted ballets, plays, and musicals. Today, visitors can stop by the venue to catch a performance or enjoy a lovely meal at the on-site restaurant.
Built in 1852, the magnificent Stadtkirche St. Pankratius is counted as a Grade II listed of building of Warstein. Designed by the renowned German architect Friedrich Heinrich Kronenberg, the beautiful church stands as an excellent example of Neo-Gothic architecture with its intricate pinnacles, portals and exquisite windows. The soaring tower of the church measuring 86 meters (282 feet) dominates the city skyline and welcomes worshipers from far and wide. Subject to several renovations over the years, 2010 being the most recent, this 19th-century church is an important cultural landmark of the city.
One of the oldest churches in the village, Evangelische Dorfkirche is a beautiful Gothic church probably dating back to the 14th Century. The church has a spectacular facade and equally impressive interiors. The church altar is an exceptional triptych dating back to the mid-14th Century. The baptismal font comes from 1693. The church is a significant local church and conducts regular services.
