Il Castello

The angel that stands out from the bell tower of the Castle church with its finger pointing to the underlying city cathedral is the city's sentimental emblem. Udine was the first European city to have a parliament functioning frequently and regularly. It began as early as 1282, and its seat was in this castle. Today, you can look to the top of the hill where it stands and see the castle, part of which dates back to medieval times. Following an earthquake in 1511, part of the castle was rebuilt and the new building was used for residential, administrative and jurisdictional purposes. The Parlamento room stands out among the many rooms of this old manor for its impressive historical architecture. At the end of your visit, stop by the former prison where Silvio Pellico, among others, was held. Entrance is free on Sunday mornings.

Piazza Libertà

This piazza, overlooked by castle hill and bound by the Loggia del Lionello on one side and the Loggia di San Giovanni and Torre dell'Orologio on the other, has become a symbol of the city. The piazza boasts a fountain attributed to the Bergamo architect Giovanni Carrara and the neoclassical Statue of Peace.

Contemporanea

Contemporanea is one of the few music festivals in Italy dedicated to contemporary music. The festival organizers collaborate with local theaters and present a competition for fresh, unpublished music that is eventually launched on the internet. Most of the festival takes place the Teatro San Giorgio, visit website for details and more information.

Piazza San Giacomo Matteotti

This typical Venetian piazza is Udine s veritable center, and dates back to the first decades of the 13th century. It is enclosed on three sides by porticoed homes and the Baroque Church of San Giacomo on another. At the center, on an elevated base and covered in the same stone that lines the piazza, is the fountain by Giovanni da Udine and on the side facing the well stands a statue of the Madonna with child. A market has been held here since the piazza was first built.

Ex Chiesa San Francesco

Built during the 13th Century, this huge church is a wonderful example of medieval architecture. Being one of the oldest buildings in Udine, the church draws visitors who admire its walls, frescoes and ancient structure. It is now used by local organizations to host exhibitions and community events.

Villa Manin

Villa Manin was built between the 17th and 18th Centuries commissioned by the Manin family, a powerful family of doges and high dignitaries of the Serenissima that had its representational seat here. A little too ambitious for a villa, but slightly more modest than an imperial palace, the plan of the complex takes the same shape as the one Bernini adopted for San Pietro in Rome the work of the famous architect Domenico Rossi whilst the changes to the building's main body was completed by Giorgio Massari. The interior is a triumph of plastercasts, marble and frescoes, the work of the Frenchman Ludovico Dorigny. Today, somewhat neglected evidence of its former glory remains in the park to the rear of the villa, the extensive gardens and meadows, water fountains allegorical statues of mythological inspiration, with rare and exotic touches. Annexed to the complex is the octagonal chapel, an imitation of the Madonna della Salute in Venice, with sculptures by Giuseppe Torretti. Visitors can visit the museum of carriages and arms as well as the various exhibitions that are periodically held here.
