"A Symbolic Doorway"

The Portals of the Past is a wondrous, albeit peculiar, monument overlooking the Lloyd Lake. The fire and earthquake of 1906 had left the entire city of San Francisco in utter ruins. Like most buildings on California Street, the Nob Hill mansion collapsed and bit dust. The entire building was destroyed, save for the columns at mansion's doorway. These columns were later moved to the Golden Gate Park in 1909, where they stand today, as an ode to the lives lost in the calamity as well as a symbol of the city's resilience.
