A vibrant and buzzing neighborhood located right in the heart of the city, South of Market (known by locals as "SoMa") is a cultural delight. With a huge number of tech companies headquartered here, this stretch of the city is filled with hip 20 and 30-somethings. Visit art galleries, museums and cultural spaces, or simply go party in one of the many premier nightclubs. The Museum of Modern Art, Moscone Convention Center, Yerba Buena Center, and AT&T Park are all located here, as well as a number of upscale boutique hotels. The rough boundaries of the neighborhood are east of Market Street between The Embarcadero to the north and 10th Street to the south.
Maintained by The San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department, Howard Langton Community Garden sprawls over an area of 9,204 square feet. The park houses a wide range of flora, because of which it is rightfully recognized as the green heart of SoMa.
The verdant Jefferson Square Park occupies an area of 5.6 acres (2.26 hectares) and remains one of the finest recreational spots in Fillmore. The lush green landscape and dense plantations offer ample shade to strollers and visitors, thus making it a popular picnic spot. Jefferson Square Park is also home to a well-laid out off-leash space, where pets can roam about freely. Perched atop a small hill, it offers scenic views of Fillmore and Western Addition.
The term "Painted Ladies" refers to the row of impressive and beautiful Victorian houses that face the park on Steiner Street. Alamo Square Park, which is located at the top of a hill, provides a brilliant view of these architectural mansions. The Painted Ladies are depicted in many famous photographs and postcards of San Francisco and also features in the opening credits of the 90s TV series, Full House.
