The San Mateo Arboretum Society maintains the Marion Panaretos Rose Garden, which is situated within San Mateo’s Central Park. Named after the society's founder Marion S. Panaretos, this garden is replete with more than 100 bushes of colorful red and pink roses. Besides, it also has plenty of benches and a white cabana where one can rest and observe the flowering blooms in leisure. This place is infused with tranquility and is a good spot for morning and evening walks. The San Mateo Arboretum Society also conducts rose pruning lessons at this park and publishes a newsletter regarding the optimum care of rose plants.
In the heart of Union Square, the imposing Dewey Monument remains a major landmark of the west coast city. Nearly everyone visiting San Francisco stops by this arresting work of public art, which commemorates Admiral George Dewey, the Spanish-American War martyr. Built in the year 1903, it was inaugurated by the then president Theodore Roosevelt who dedicated the memorial to the triumph of George Dewey's army over the Spanish army at Manila Bay of Philippines during the late 19th-century war. The monument was built to the designs of Newton J. Tharp and sculpted by Robert I. Aitken.
The Historic Train Depot of Half Moon Bay was built in the early 1900s to serve the ill-fated and short-lived Ocean Shore Railroad. Although the railway line was closed in 1920, after only 15 years of operation, the station continues to stand and has been transformed into a rental room for seminars, meetings and small gatherings. As is the case with all of the Ocean Shore Railway Stations, the Historic Train Depot of Half Moon Bay looks nothing like a train depot, adding to its distinct charm. The building was originally located at Kelly Avenue and was later moved to its current location near Johnston House, just off Higgins Canyon Road.
Found close to the pagoda, the Lantern of Peace is located near the rear of the garden. Dating back to the late 19th-century, the lantern created using stone, like other lamps in the garden symbolizes Buddhism's five elements. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Spirit are all represented in this lantern.
