Bakesale Betty

Already an institution in the East Bay, Bakesale Betty has local families, hipsters, and sweet teeth forming a line out the door for delicious baked goods. Everything tastes great, but the words you'll hear coming from the lips of everybody waiting are "fried chicken sandwich." The unbelievably filling sandwich is piled high with delicious fried chicken covered with a faintly spicy, not at all soggy jalapeno coleslaw. Other favorites are the carrot cake cupcakes, the strawberry shortcake, and the bake-at-home chicken pot pies. The staff, including Betty, the eponymous owner (you can spot her by the blue wig), are all friendly and more than willing to make recommendations to newcomers. Don't let a long line put you off- they usually move fast, and people waiting to order get free cookies and lemonade. No seating inside can be a problem, but outside are stools and ironing boards serving as makeshift tables. Stop by and see what all the fuss is about.

Masse's Pastries

Located in North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto, Masse's has provided Berkeley residents and visitors with the most tasty and beautiful tartes, cakes, macarons, and more. Their delicate morsels are crafted lovingly and stylishly, and often look far too pretty to eat. Luckily, their traditional and seasonal offerings taste just as good as they look. Pair your dessert with a fresh cup of coffee, and take a seat inside the tiny bakery, or at one of the sidewalk tables.

Humphry Slocombe

Using locally produced products from Straus Organic Dairy, Humphry Slocombe is a unique ice-cream shop located in the Mission district of San Francisco. This funky little shop serves up some of the wackiest flavors, including old Hebrew ale, foie gras, butterbeer, candied ginger, government cheese and many other odd but delicious icy concoctions. With over 75 flavors created, 10-12 are usually available in the shop and rotated often. They are also partnered with various restaurants and shops around the city, so getting your hands on some Humphry Slocombe ice-cream is rather easy.

Caffe Sport

Caffe Sport is a popular North Beach establishment patronized by celebrities, tourists and locals. The restaurant is vibrant and artistic. Majolica tiles and brightly-colored paint cover tables, benches and walls. Folklore-inspired knick-knacks hang to the left and to the right. It specializes in Sicilian cuisine, offering a variety of pasta and seafood dishes. The pasta is topped with gourmet goodies like Italian cheeses, shrimp, scallops, lobster, zucchini and garlic. With seafood stew, steamed mussels and chilled crab salad available, fish lovers will have a hard time deciding what to order.

Should you be in the mood for hearty, meaty German food in substantial portions, stop by Suppenküche. This trendy, casual restaurant serves brunch and dinner. Reservations can be made for parties of six or more. Big, wooden beer hall-style tables and traditional, seasonal decorations will have you thinking you've been transported to a family-run inn somewhere in the Bavarian countryside. Grab a stein of lager (or maybe even a boot!), pull up a chair and revel in the vibe. Dozens of German and Belgian beers are available on draft and in the bottle. The kitchen serves up old favorites like Kartoffelsuppe and Wiener Schnitzel. The wait staff is quick and friendly. See the website for the menu, beer list and complete glossary of beer terminology.

This authentic tavern located in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco offers a warm welcoming atmosphere and delicious German and Austrian cuisine. The decor leans on the side of kitschy with rich wood paneling, oil paintings, family photos, mounted antlers and the waitresses in traditional dirndls outfits. Patrons can order a "das boot" which is a large glass boot vessel for beer or one of their many delicious menu items including pappardelle, house-made sausage, goulash, vegetable strudel and more.
