Top Rated Attractions in San Sebastian

Monte Igueldo

Monte Igueldo is a picturesque mountain which consists of several attractions including two theme parks, the Funicular Railway and the Funfair; both of which have separate attractions for the whole family to enjoy. If you are the adventurous type, then the Roller Coaster or the Mysterious River is a must try. But if you prefer slower rides, then the Carousels and Igueldo's Train are perfect for you. The mountain also offers spectacular views of the vistas unfurling in the vicinity.

The San Sebastián Aquarium

Don't miss the San Sebastián Aquarium, with its underwater tunnel and fascinating 360º view of marine fauna. The big attraction is the huge skeleton of the last whale to have been hunted and caught in local waters. There's also a history section about the region's fishing, shipping and ship-building industries. When you get hungry, try the delightful restaurant inside the aquarium. The complex opened in 1928 and was completely refurbished before re-opening to the public in 1998.

Plaza de la Constitución

The plaza's present appearance is the result of a design by 19th-century architects Pedro Manuel de Ugartemendia and Alexo de Miranda. This square is the social and urban center of the Parte Vieja, occupying a place held by earlier squares that were destroyed by fires on two previous occasions, in 1813 and 1689, when the square was used as a bullring. Its layout is that of conventional Spanish plazas, with apartment buildings above arches on three sides and a monumental building on the fourth, in this case, the old town hall. The beautiful plaza is neoclassical in style, and on the ground floor you'll find shops and alfresco cafes with typical Old World charm.

Basílica de Santa María del Coro

The building of this basilica occupies a traditional religious place in the city. The Basílica de Santa María del Coro consists of an open area, typical of Basque churches, with three naves of equal height covered by ribbed vaults constructed in 1771. In the interior the juxtaposition of the altarpiece and the laterals is striking. Access to the church is through a lateral in the form of a niche, richly decorated with two towers, and perhaps the building's most outstanding feature. Furthermore, the portal is perfectly integrated into the urban setting as a feature at the end of the city's main street.

Monte Jaizkibel

Situated between Hondarribia and Pasaia, Mount Jaizkibel runs parallel to the coast, burying itself in the sea and forming spectacular cliffs. The mountain top is of interest for the various ancient and newer monuments situated here. You can visit the five dolmens known as Iskulun and Jaizkibel I, II, III, and IV. The medieval San Enrique Castle consists of the remains of a military fortress, with circular towers. It offers fantastic views all around. There are also five towers from the 19th Century (also highly visible) used for transmitting light signals. Mount Jaizkibel can only be reached on foot from Hondarribia (Interurbanos bus) or from Pasaia (Herribus bus).

Museum Cemento Rezola

One of the few of its kind in the city, Museum Cemento Rezola traces the history of cement, and its use in some of the city's most iconic structures. The museum takes you on an intriguing yet exiting journey through the transcendence of cement, and the impact it had on the evolution of civilization as a whole. Through an audiovisual tour of the site, visitors can learn about the discovery and use of cement through the years, and its evolution into reinforced concrete- that is largely used in the structures of the modern world.
