Located near, the charming town of Sankt Goarshausen, the natural rock of Lorelei, forms one of the best known features of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Mainzer Sand is a protected natural reserve boasting of rare species of fauna and flora, many of which do not occur in the major parts of Europe. Originating during the Ice Age due to sand drifts, this land form has unique soil that hardly retains minerals and water and gets heated quickly under the sun. These unique conditions have made the growth of grasses and plants such as Adonis Vernalis favorable.
