A famous landmark in the city of Wiesbaden, the Wiesbaden City Palace was built in the 19th century for the Dukes of Nassau in the Neoclassic architectural style. The palace is an impressive structure with several rooms and wings, and today, it functions as the base of the Hessian State Parliament with parts of the building open to public.
Burgruine Scharfenstein is a historical structure dating back to 1160. Built under Christian I, this beautiful castle was once a major military fortress in the region and a great structure in the line of defense of the town of Mainz. Today, most of the castle has fallen into disrepair, and only its magnificent keep stands tall above the town. Interestingly, the tower remains an important symbol of Kiedrich, which is reflected in the town's coat of arms emblem. Locals and tourists frequent this now-ruined structure to witness what remains of this once-solid fortification. Due to safety reasons, the entrance is locked and can only be accessed after picking up the key at the town hall.
Located along the coast of Rhein river, the Ehrenfels Castle (Hesse) was once known for its medieval architectural charm. This 13th Century marvel was commissioned by Archbishop of Mainz to protect the village and the surrounding area from the constant attacks of Henry V, Vicar of Franconia. The castle is located in the same vicinity as the Mouse tower and together form an important historical landmark in the area. Though in a state of ruins, the castle is popular tourist attraction.
Situated in the city of Oberwesel, Schönburg is an elaborately-built castle that dates back to 911 CE. It was owned by the Dukes of Schönburg for hundreds of years beginning in the 12th Century. The castle remained in their family till it was burnt down by French troops in 1689. After restorations in the 19th Century, the castle was reopened as a hotel. The hotel offers a lavish setting for a memorable holiday with rooms and suites featuring period furnishings and decor. Beautiful views of the Rhine Valley can be seen from some of the hotel rooms. There is a restaurant that serves delicious authentic cuisine as well.
Rising 100 meters (330 foot) above the scenic Moselle River, Reichsburg Cochem is a towering medieval period castle perched atop a hill. Originally, its purpose was to collect a toll from each passing shop, now it's serves as a popular tourist destination in the area. Its unique combination of neo-gothic architecture with remnants of Romanesque design stands testament to the many hands it changed over the centuries. This massive, medieval style church is the grandest attraction in the town of Boppard. Beneath the Severus church (12th century) one can visit the remains of a Roman baths.
