"Largest Native Grassland of Cali"

Home to the sandstone landmark of the Painted Rock, the Carrizo Plain occupies California's southern region, and has the San Andreas Fault line slicing through its sweeping expanse. The centerpiece of the plain is the Carrizo Plain National Monument, deemed to be the largest grassland of its kind in California, with a sprawl of 246,812 acres (99,881 hectares). Awash in astounding sights and spectacular geological formations, the monument is a refuge for numerous endangered wildlife and species of flora, and also preserves an immense cultural heritage of the Native Americans. The Painted Rock is one of its most salient features, sheltering within millennia-old pictographs collectively created by the Chumash and Yokuts peoples. Perhaps the most striking facet of the park however, is the Superbloom phenomenon that usually occurs between the months of March and May. During this time, wildflowers drench the landscape in a fusion of bright yellow and lavender colors, attracting scores of nature enthusiasts to this cheerful display.
