Fort Pulaski National Monument

Constructed in 1847, Fort Pulaski was considered a state-of-the-art defense system, though it fell to the Union troops during the Civil War. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved fort and its surroundings. The fort's interior exhibits original artifacts and provides insights into the daily lives of soldiers during the Civil War. Sprawling across 5,623 acres (2,275 hectares), this monument comprises nature trails, picnic areas and spectacular views of the salt marshes. Additionally, the park offers ranger-led programs and field trips that provide historical context and bring the story of Fort Pulaski to life.

Skidaway Island State Park

The 588-acre (237 hectares) Skidaway Island State Park is a barrier island and a perfect day-trip for the Savannah visitor wanting to get to know the natural ecology of coastal Georgia. Facilities at the park include a museum, picnic shelters, a playground and observation towers. Tent, trailer, and RV sites are available for overnight camping. Scenic nature trails provide visitors a chance to view the spectacular environment and watch for wildlife, especially shore birds. The park is also a popular wedding destination.

Wormsloe State Historic Site

Wormsloe State Historic Site is a captivating destination that offers a glimpse into the region's history and natural beauty. This expansive historic site is known for its iconic live oak-lined avenue. Located approximately 10 miles (16 miles) southeast of downtown Savannah, the plantation was established in 1737 by Noble Jones, one of the first British colonists who arrived in Georgia with General James E. Oglethorpe. A plantation house built in 1828 stands at the site, as do the remains of the original house built by Noble. A museum displays artifacts and other exhibits.

Savannah Botanical Gardens

Opened in the late 1980s, the Savannah Botanical Garden offers a serene oasis that feels far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Savannah. The grounds include gorgeously curated formal gardens, as well as more natural arrangements that focus on the local flora of the area. Visitors can wander the parks trails, check out an archaeology site, and peek into the windows of the 19th-Century Reinhard House that sits to one side of the gardens. Other highlights include the bog garden, David Austin English rose garden, and the magical fern garden.

Fort McAllister Historic Park

It was from these earthwork battlements that the Confederate forces held out for nearly two years before being taken by the marauding General William Tecumseh Sherman. Upon its surrender in 1864, the destructive swath across Georgia known as Sherman's March to the Sea marks its territory. A small museum, visitor's center, and a few trails surround the restored battlements. The park's location along the Ogeechee River offers beautiful scenic views. It's a lovely place to take in the natural surroundings and perhaps catch a memorable sunset.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

One of the largest natural preserves in South Carolina, Sea Pines Forest Preserve is a must-visit for those looking to spend time amidst nature. Traverse its network of walking trails and explore its scenic environs that include the spectacular Sea Pines Shell Rings, a 4000-year-old archaeological site that is the oldest of its kind on the island. Witness alligators and other wildlife in its natural habitat, take an immersive boat tour, try your hand at fishing, or take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk overlooking wild marshes, rice fields, and wildflowers.
