Best Water Attractions in Seattle

Visitors to Seattle are usually stunned by the abundance of water surrounding the city. Just north of downtown lies Lake Union. Surrounded by houseboat communities, marinas, shipbuilders and glitzy restaurants, the lake is a hub of activity. Seaplanes take off and land, sharing the 600-acre lake with kayaks, canoes, powerboats, sailboats and tugboats. Nestled amidst numerous attractions and landmarks like Space Needle, Seattle Center, IMAX Theater and Chihuly Gardens, the International Fountain never fails to capture the attention of the visitors. There's not much grass at Waterfall Gardens, but that won't bother you for long. The dominant materials in this Pioneer Square park are wood, concrete and water. It's like stepping into a Zen water and rock garden. The splashing water drowns out traffic noise and soothes the soul, while the few plants stir gently in the breeze. Benches provide a welcome urban respite. There's a plaque on the outside wall commemorating, the birthplace of the United Parcel Service.

With numerous fun-but-tacky tourist shops and the Alaskan Way Viaduct thundering overhead, the Seattle Waterfront should instead be visited for the spectacular views. Also bringing people here is the Bainbridge Island ferry that leaves from Colman Dock, and the popular Summer Nights at the Pier concerts play at sublime Pier 62/63. The Seattle Aquarium and the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center are also here. The old streetcar clangs along the length of the waterfront, and the green spaces of Myrtle Edwards Park take over from the concrete mayhem at the northern end.

Waterfront Park is one of the best places in Seattle to witness local scene amidst a backdrop of splendid waterfront views. One can arrange a picnic with loved ones, try fishing or just soak up the sun and enjoy the breeze caressing your face. There are numerous other must-visit attractions located a stone's throw away.

Located on the waterfront, next to the Omnidome, this aquarium features exotic fishes, sea mammals and other ocean life. See the sea lions, harbor seals, incredibly cute sea otters and even come face to face with a shark. New exhibits are added often along with, special events and outings.

In an area surrounded by water, travel by boat makes sense. Washington State Ferry is the largest ferry system in the United States, serving nearly 18 million commuters and visitors a year. Eight routes service 20 terminals, including the downtown Seattle ferry docks at Piers 50 and 52, Fauntleroy Dock in West Seattle, Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island, Bremerton and others. Operating 365 days a year, the ferries allow passengers to experience the magnificent Puget Sound scenery. The schedule changes seasonally and varies by day of the week, with adjusted schedules on holidays.

Take advantage of those sunny Seattle days by taking the family to Wild Waves. This water park that's just outside of Seattle has something to satisfy all ages: a 24,000 gallon (90,850 liters) wave pool for the kids, a beer garden for the adults, and three roller coasters for thrill-seekers of any age. After spending the day in the water, satisfy those hunger pangs with a bite at The Wharf, the on-site food-stop, or grab a cool treat at Dippin Dots. The Wild Waves day pass is moderately priced, making this attraction tough to beat in terms of both value and fun.
