Gabrielle's is an East Side tradition, a store for women looking for that special, expensive dress or outfit. It is located in a row of businesses in Wayland Square that includes the Newport Creamery and Books on the Square. Gabrielle's is known for tempting window displays filled with flowery skirts, delicate dresses and georgette, crepe and embroidered blouses. The store offers silk scarves, kid gloves, leather bags, and other fine accessories.
Wickenden Street is a busy and colorful shopping, dining and entertainment area in the Fox Point neigborhood. Not only is there a ton of restaurants and cafes here, the street has unique stores too. In between the streets of Hope and Benefit, Wickenden Street has some nice world cuisine at Taste of India, Sakura and Sawadee. Other shops include City Gardens Florists and the popular Adler's Hardware store, as well as other small specialty, clothes and gift shops.
When students want to tool around College Hill on two wheels, they usually find them at Legend Bicycle. There is a wide range of bikes, from brand name advanced ones for serious riders to trikes for tykes, Legend has the right bike for you. The price point on each bike varies depending on whether it is new or used and when you do purchase, the pros here offer tons of services like replacement parts and they also have years of expertise at their disposal.
Thayer Street is the main thoroughfare that runs along College Hill and its a popular spot with RISD, Brown and J&W University college students. Thayer has always been a part of the counter-culture college scene and most of the stores still remain fiercely independent despite a few chain brands like Starbucks along the way. Between Bowen and Waterman streets is where you'll find most of the restaurants and shops, stores such as Spectrum India and Pie in the Sky as well as several casual places to eat like East Side Pockets or Nice Slice. A couple of other highlights include the historic Avon Theater and the Brown University Bookstore.
The Brown Bookstore is a multi-purpose business that functions as the school library, tourist attraction, and book vendor. On the second floor there are rows of textbooks and in the basement, you can find computer supplies, software, and other electronic material. On the ground floor, there is a large and clearly marked section of books of all types, from fiction and cooking to foreign language and history. There is also a campus gift shop, offering cards and an array of items sporting the Brown name or insignia. If you like books and/or want to get a memento of Brown or Providence, this is a place to stop.
Spectrum India is primarily a clothing and accessories shop, however it has a little bit of everything, from books and bags to shoes, clothes, hats and home decor. The women's clothes here are unique, often made in India with rich fabrics and unusual designs. You can find everything from elegant dresses to pants and casual tops, along with accessories like scarves and jewelry. It has been in the neighborhood for over 30 years and the denizens of College Hill continue it hopes to do so for another thirty more.
